The Trent XWB will be created by using advanced manufacturing techniques to develop a lighter, more capable and efficient engine to meet tomorrow’s operational needs.

Fan diameter

The fan diameter is 118 inches. The wide-chord fan blades are the lightest and strongest fan blades in the world and are able to withstand a multiple bird strike.

HP Turbine

The HP Turbine rotor consists of 68 blades and rotates at 12,000rpm, generating centrifugal loads of up to 10 tons on each blade; equivalent to the weight of a London bus. The HP Turbine generates over 50,000 horsepower which amounts to 800 horsepower per blade - equivalent to a Formula 1 racing car.

Advanced Cooling

Combustion temperatures exceed the melting point of the combustion chamber material. Cooling air is used together with ceramic coatings to enable the material to perform in these extreme environments.

The Trent XWB has a 10 per cent specific fuel consumption advantage over it’s competitors.This can save our customers around US$2.9 million per aircraft per year in fuel costs alone. This has been achieved through extensive demonstrator programmes delivering significant improvements in compressor and turbine efficiency.
